Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne

The allegorical significance of the story is that Goodman Brown was seeing his community being affected, and seeing what his community has been hiding for so long. Instead of living it he was watching it through a dark cloud, which he imaganed but was still true. Some aspects of the story that seems revelant to the seventeenth century New England are when most of the people are witches like back then, and the thoughts of the people back then. Goodman's catholic teacher turns out to be a witch too which, could be a general theme to suugest the New England century.

a letter from birmingham

King’s tone in the opening paragraph is being considerate but ironic. I might make an argument for it being ironic because King says he has been so full of activity that he doesn’t have much time but still tries to respond to the clergymen, when he is in jail and has more than time. But uses this ironic description to make a point that he is the same as them, the clergymen.
